The local housing market will likely experience its best spring selling session in a decade. Mortgage rates are still low. Fewer families are underwater on their mortgage and housing inventory continues to keep buyers interested!

Maryland Mortgage Program Update

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development now works through its network of lenders to offer 30 year fixed mortgages and significant down payment assistance.  The DHCD's goal is to do $500 million in Maryland's Mortgage Loan Programs. ­­­­­­­­New programs by the Department include Maryland Homefront which is special rates for veterans and active duty military families as well as the Maryland Home Credit program which allows new homebuyers to claim up to a $2,000 federal income tax credit for as long as the loan is outstanding.For more information visit the Maryland Mortgage Program website at www.mmp.maryland.gov

Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act!

This spring marks the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, historic legislation that ensures and guarantees fair housing for all. Maryland's most recent protected class is Gender Identity.

Gender Identity is generally defined as a person's private sense of his or her own gender. This differs from Sexual Orientation. A transgender person identifies with or expresses him or herself different than the one assigned at birth. The discrimination prohibitions apply not only to selling or renting but to all aspects of mortgage lending, appraisals etc. Exceptions exist for the sale or rental of a home by the owner, rental of a private room in a home, religious organizations and private clubs. Protected classes include Color, Familial Status, National Origin, Physical or Mental Disability, Race, Religion, Sex, Marital Status and Sexual Orientation.
